Vyacheslav
Korolenkov
One Chinese wiseman once told to his apprentice, “If you want to become an artist, you’ll need to learn your craft for 15 years, and after that, don’t take a brush for the next 15 years. After that, you might become an artist”.
Amazingly, that’s exactly what happened in my life.
I was born in a small town not far from Tula. When I was a school student, I would always draw something during classes, and, no matter how hard my teachers tried, they weren’t able to prevent me from doing that. Later, in order to get to the art university, I started taking private drawing and painting lessons from a sculptor. When I was young, there always were some reasons to be proud of myself:
- I got into the Stroganov Moscow State Academy of Arts and Industry from the first attempt.
- While I was a student, one of my student’s works represented the Stroganovka at the exhibition in Prague. It was a drawing of a nude model.
- After I graduated from the Academy, my works were exhibited in the Central Artists’ House. My works were interesting for collectors and were bought very well.
But later… came a 15-year-long-break when I didn’t come to an easel. For all that time I was trying to figure out my purpose, what I had been born for, why I had been the way I had and what I would need to do with this life of mine.
As years went by, I came to understand that the world had gifted me the happiness of reflecting its amazing arrangement. Only now, 25 years after my graduation, I feel the true joy and excitement when I paint. I didn’t have it back then. It’s this feeling of magical soaring that leads my paint-stained brush across the canvas, it rules everything, it’s where every piece comes from. I might even say that my main mentor is joy. Of course, during my journey, I met drawing and painting teachers which shared their experience with me. I did and do have painting idols, such as Nikolay Feshin, Konstantin Korovin, Valentin Serov, Mikhail Vrubel. But, still, my main teacher is every sunny day giving my the opportunity to breathe, smile, communicate with my friends and beloved ones.
Few words about art:
Any artist can be easily identified in a crowd, even when they don’t have any drawing tools. They look at the world differently. Artists live through every moment of life more fully. It’s the total immersion in the world around which gives a huge joy of drawing. I’m inspired by color. For city studies, I use watercolor or gouache. But if I can draw a live model, that’s happiness! There’s nothing else as beautiful as a human. I’m so drawn to human’s beauty, that it’s impossible to say no to the temptation of drawing the nature’s most sublime and perfect creation.
