WHERE SHOULD WE START, or PATH TO BEING AN ARTIST
It started back when I was a child. Everyone draws when they’re a kid. I was no exception - I liked drawing and I drew all the time. In the early 90s, I went to the Art and Graphic Arts Department of the Odessa Pedagogy Institute where I learnt watercolors, but I studied there only for 2 years because I had to change my career and specialty. My brushes and paints had been put away for two decades - I worked in a bank for almost 14 years. Later, in 2011, I had a business trip to Klaipeda in Lithuania and stayed there to live. It’s in this place where I got back to creative work.
SECOND BEGINNING, or ABOUT HAPPY INCIDENTS AND FRIENDS
Painting got the second start thanks to the Internet - how can a modern person do without it? Once I saw pictures by Joseph Zbukvic, I went to the attic to get my paints from the institute years and started painting again. Back then, I was working in a port - ships, metalware, cargoes… and my three watercolors taped on the wall in my office. One day, a man came in - we’re good friends now - saw them, took them from the wall to show to some gallerists, and in couple of months, I had my first solo exhibition. For almost two years, this exhibition had been changing, modifying and displayed in various Lithuanian cities. It was an active start! In the following 4-5 years, I took part in various shows and contests in China, Europe, America, Australia. My works got awards, and the paintings themselves found their new homes around the world. I had more than 10 solo exhibitions.
ABOUT WATERCOLORS, IT’S ALL ABOUT THEM…
My main subject is cityscape. I love painting how a city lives and I try to choose subjects with either backlight, or direct light.
How do I paint? Very often do I apply thick dark paint onto the darkest areas and later apply washes on top of that. I like how water breaks and dilutes the very first underpainting. A specific color is not that important, but tonal values and color palette are. And it’s very important to present the intention and idea of a painting.
Today, Sergiy Lysyy is a leader of IWS Lithuania. Not only does he paint, but he also teaches other people during masterclasses and plein air sessions held in his city and different countries.
Also, he is actively mastering the Internet space with the educational platform Enterclass - he live streams and films video classes, which allow you to study online - from any corner of the world.

I take every piece seriously: it’s important for me to tell about what I saw, it’s important to convey the intention and idea behind a painting. I don’t like being pigeon-holed so I always search and try to be different in watercolors.

«Началось все с детства. В детстве все рисуют. И я любил рисовать и рисовал всегда. В начале 90-х годов поступил в Одесский педагогический институт на художественно-графический факультут — изучал там акварель, но отучился всего два года — пришлось сменить профессию и специальность. На два десятка лет кисти и краски были отложены в дальний ящик — почти 14 лет я проработал в банке, а потом в 2011 приехал в командировку в Клайпеду, в Литву, и остался в этом городе насовсем. Именно здесь я снова вспомнил о творчестве.»

или о счастливых случаях и друзьях
«Второе начало рисованию дал Интернет, куда без него современному человеку? Как только я увидел в гугле картины Джозефа Збуковича, я полез на чердак за институтскими красками и снова начал рисовать.Тогда я работал в порту: корабли, железки, грузы… и три мои акварельки прицепленные на скотч в офисе. Однажды ко мне по делу зашёл человек (теперь мой хороший друг), увидел их, снял со стены, чтобы показать галеристам и через пару месяцев состоялась моя первая персональная выставка. Почти два года эта выставка видоизменялась, дополнялась и выставлялась в разных городах в Литве. Это был новый активный старт! В ближайшие 4-5 лет я поучаствовал в разных выставках и конкурсах в Китае, Европе, Америке, Австралии (картины неоднократно занимали призовые места, а сами работы разлетелись к новым владельцам по всему миру). Было больше десяти персональных выставок.»
Об акварели, все о ней…
«Основные мои картины — городские пейзажи. Я люблю рисовать жизнь города и стараюсь выбирать сюжеты с контражурным или прямым светом.Как я рисую? Часто я наношу густую темную краску на самые темные места, а затем делаю заливку поверх. Мне нравится, как вода разрывает, растворяет первую прорисовку. В моих работах не всегда важен конкретный цвет, но очень важен тон и цветовая гамма. И всегда важно показать замысел, идею картины.»
Сегодня художник Сергей Лысый является лидером IWS Lithuania. Он не только сам рисует, но и преподает на мастер-классах и пленэрах в родном городе и в других странах. А ещё активно осваивает интернет-пространство с образовательной платформой Энтеркласс: проводит прямые онлайн-трансляции и снимает видеоуроки, по которым можно учиться удаленно из любого уголка Земли.
