How to paint not just a portrait, but a personality, emotions, charisma? How to catch a likeness and make a watercolor painting three-dimensional and lively? There are hundreds of faces, looks and smiles around us every day – we collect their images, catch details and fall for their charm. Get rid of all the fears and tell your stories in faces in watercolors in this course by Anastasia Kustova. Portrait is an extract of your mastery, ability to observe and desire for creation. Throughout these four lessons you’ll learn how to paint people, feel the proportions and catch a likeness. Make the four steps from the simple things to the complex ones, from a general silhouette from the back to the dynamic figure. The course is based on the marathon of the same name.

Outcome of the course

You’ll learn how to paint a figure and people, use proper proportions and represent a model both in a static and a dynamic pose. You’ll practice achieving likeness and see what is the difference between painting from life and from a photo. You’ll master wet on wet technique, use different color schemes and apply all the theory to practice.

You’ll paint four watercolors. You’ll cover the path from a simple work and learning basics to the full dynamic portrait. You’ll polish all the main components of any painting – light and shadow, composition, color palette and tonal values. You’ll try painting in an expressive, effortless and free manner!

Anastasia will share her original techniques and methods, teach you all the theory you need and support everyone who aims to get airy and lively watercolors!

The two on a walk

We’ll convey an atmosphere of lightness and movement. You’ll learn about the body proportions, figure out the basic concepts of light, shadow and reflects on the simple volumetric elements. You’ll master sketching of a two-person composition with background and details.

In a café

We’ll paint a figure in a static pose, learn how to simplify the not so important details and accent the crucial. We’ll play with mixes for the skin and hair, learn about the reflected light and shadows depending on the lighting conditions and person’s features.

Profile

Together with the artist, you’ll master the alla prima technique and learn how to change values simultaneously. You’ll practice creating a more complex shadow and light pattern and reflected light on the face, using a limited palette.

Riding a bike

Wind in the hair and energy of motion. We’re wrapping up the marathon with the most complex composition. Together with Anastasia, you’ll figure out how the clothes colors change depending on the lighting, you’ll learn how to choose the colors to your liking and stylize the work in your original manner. You’ll paint a large watercolor with a dynamic figure.

Materials for the course

Surface

Watercolor paper, 100% cotton, 300 gsm, by the following brands: DMD, Hahnemuhle, Lana, Moulin du Roy, Saunders Waterford, Arches, Canson Watercolor, etc.

Media

Set of professional watercolors of 24 colors or more. For example: Pinax, White Nights, Van Gogh, Schminke, Winsor&Newton, Lukas, or other, either in pans or tubes.

Additionally, you might need the following paints:
- yellow ochre
- burnt sienna
- perylene violet or Bordeaux (a cool red)
- Payne’s gray
- purple
- indigo
- olive green
- horizon blue (or cobalt turquoise)

If you already have some brushes, use your familiar set. If you are planning to buy the brushes, here are some recommendations: squirrel, sable or synthetic, made specifically for watercolors. Round and flat and a big flat brush for wetting the paper.
